Thankful for brilliant covers!!

Of course I'm thankful for family and friends and I've been extremely blessed with a new and fantastic job this year! I couldn't ask for more. But the holidays make me especially grateful for music!

Thank you to any musician who keeps creating new and inspiring sounds/lyrics and covers to share with the rest of the world. I only allow myself a handful of credits and strength and independence I own up to. Music allows me the reason to feel human (anything at all)  (and flawed) and to give pause and live in the moment. Without these moments I would cease to exist!

To be able to make a playlist of my own to combine new artists and create a general vibe that gets me through the day and *excited* to do so, is the best feeling in the world! I'm still working on a few, but in the meantime I want to post some brillant covers of otherwise *nauseating* songs!

To be able to re-purpose songs like these is a true testament to the talent of these artists/musicians.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

transition into fall (concert dates & remixes)

Indie Shuffle strikes again!

Sexiest cover I've ever heard
http://www.indieshuffle.com/arctic-monkeys-do-i-wanna-know-ms-mr-cover/

MS MR will be playing my favorite venue Lincoln Hall Sept 30th

Arctic Monkeys will be playing at the Riv towards the end of Sept. Tix are sold out but you could always hope that JAM USA will be doing a give a way. Very disappointed I was late to the game on getting tickets.

Both songs enhance their persona as ''bad boy'' Brits, their lyrics are sexy and edgy, insightful, romantic and who doesn't aspire to be friends with all of the above?

Speaking of sexy and edgy number two band for both traits on my list

Another British band covered brilliantly (and I do not take this praise lightly as I'm a huge Radiohead fan!) I just love the arrangement of this song and it changes mid song to make an exciting transition!

Just bought tix for The Neighbourhood @ the Metro 10/2 I love the genre crossing its surprising and refreshing.

The Neighbourhood – Sweater Weather

Finally the 1975 finally released their EP

Favorite track on this album that hasn't been previously released favorites (''Sex'' and ''Chocolate'')

Settle Down
The 1975 – Settle Down

Now time for the ladies to get a little praise

Daughter is my favorite ''new'' artist, there is such vunerabillity in the vocals its hard to resist on a cloudy day.. but not all songs are melancoly and sad

Happy Dance Part II

To expand on the last post.. I've taken my favorites from Pitchfork's Playlist + a playlist I made last year (still relavent) into one extensive playlist called "Happy Dance'' (pt 2)..

Because sometimes I know I can take life a little too seriously! As evidence by the people watching accomplished yesterday. I need to let go and act a little silly and dance like nobody's watching! Not just ''live in the middle'' Happy Dance

Dance! you know you want to- I won't tell anyone- :)

Music Festival Preparation

These playlists aren't mine but they are too amazing not to post!

Pitchfork tomorrow & Lolla coming up! So psyched this is my equivalent to Christmas Season!!

2013 Pitchfork Music Festival Playlist

Can I say that I'm throughly impressed with Ms. Solange, ''Some things just never F***ing Work out''?? Genius!

And why haven't I heard of Savages until now? (British) kind of an emo child of the Arctic Monkeys+  the Stones? What do we think?

Save the best for last.. My new obsession! Waxahatchee! There are no words reallly. Love the entire album! belongs on an indie movie soundtrack (acoustic, understated, raw lyrics) brillant lyrics! for sure Blue Pt. II is my favorite.. '' and when i look into your olive colored eyes..''Waxahatchee - Cerulean Salt
'' i said on the night that we met I am not well''-Brother Bryan

Seeing them live at Schubas tonight!:)

Nylon also created a Lolla playlist for this year but I'm not impressed with it.. looking forward to making my own.. but I won't deny you the opportunity to judge for yourself.
Lollapalooza 2013

I do like Kendrick Lamar's ''Please Don't Kill my Vibe'' :)

James Blake No Limits @ the Metro Chicago 5/2/13

As soon as I heard British musician James Blake was coming to my fair city. I dropped any plans I may have had (three or so months in advance) I was positive it would sell out the humble Metro venue.-- I was right!

His signature sound entails vocals of an angelic choir boy, mixed with infectious beats he is living proof that both styles can in fact come from a person and not solely from a machine. He's an anomly really, he can geniunely sing Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You'' with such heartbreaking emotion that you would assume the girl as the subject of the song were sitting out in the audience.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri6bd4G-Aig

He saved this song for last mind you

His new single ''Retrograde'' off of his recently released album Overgrown was the highlight for me a personal anthem of mine

You’re on your own, in a world you’ve grown
I’ll wait, so show me why you’re strong
Ignore everybody else,
We’re alone now

vimeo.com/59361603
His lyrics like his vocals, showcase a dicotomy between strength/independence and extreme vunerability. Only a handful of artists I know can accomplish both in equal measure.

To prove he's not a complete softy, he started the set with energetic solos of sorts heavy on the House style.. side of the spectrum.. I swore I detected hints of salsa music! I've never heard in previous cuts of songs he's done. The names of the songs I don't recall (I doubt there were any, I'm almost certain he was freestyling)

James Blake is a talent that will surprise you at every single turn. Whether it's the subtlety of his vocals or the drastic changes in beats or mood. the title ''Retrograde'' is misleading as Blake doesn't appear to be moving backward in any form. I would rename it ''No Limits'' because that's the amount of potential he has. Can't wait to see him continue to evolve and I'm intigued to see what he comes up with next

30 Seconds to Mars @ Chicago Cultural Center 5/9/13

A friend of mine was lucky enough to get some tickets to the Q87.7 sponsored 30 Seconds to Mars concert @ the Chicago Cultural Center.

First time at the venue, my friend informed me that it used to be a Chicago library, as I looked up at the cathedral ceiling and along the walls you could see quotes of famous authors. It reminded me of one of my favorite movies ''With Honors'' Joe Pesci's character is mistaken for Walt Whitman the author and he's at Widner Library @ Harvard he says:

''This library is like a church, and when you're in church do you ever look up and wonder what people are praying for? This library is like that for me''

Perfect quote to describe this venue and the hardcore fans.

The show started off with a mini documentary about the band overcoming a lawsuit and self doubt in order to persue releasing a record, and the steady decline of the record industry as a whole.

Follwed by the new video for the single "Up in the Air'' off their upcoming album Love Lust Faith + Dreams (May 21 release) (Also this blogger's birthday!)

After listening to some tracks this morning post concert. I can tell you that Up in the Air, and almost every  one of the previously released singles, will be on repeat in your head, but that it pales in comparison to the energy you feel watching a live performance.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9uSyICrtow

I wasn't expecting the electro beat dance aspect of the single but the element of surprise made me love it more, as with most of my experiences with this particular band, I like the songs well enough but they grow on me over time and then I'm hooked.. on the melody, the grit of the vocal coming from inarguably handsome lead singer Jared Leto.

He seems geninuely comfortable on stage, there were moments that I definitely appreciated his artistic license on an acoustic song, whose name escapes me. He lives in the moment, feeding off of the crowd's energy. He demanded crowd participation, and he received it with great volume and enthusiasm. This will sound childish and sappy, but  I felt like a high school kid again, shocked that I am invited to an awesome party where the ''in crowd'' is actually connected to me, not far removed.  Leto is humble, interactive, and grateful for the fan support. I  A quality I find lacking with musicians or anyone labeled ''successful'' in the entertainment business today, Whether they are up & coming bands glorified by the press or seasoned musicians that have been making music longer than I've been alive. Devoted fans combined with a savy and geniune marketing and promotion will make a good band great!

Photos Courtesy of N.R.

At the show if you pre-ordered their new album for $15.00, and that buys you a meet & greet/signing with the band, AND they are holding a contest to fly to L.A. to hang out with the band and sleep at Jared Leto's house! Even if you're not the biggest fan, that would appeal to anyone with an heart and a mind for music.

They invited fans to come up on stage and dance with him. I swear he saw my black faux RayBans (that he wore during the first song of the night) and he was pointing at me, but alas, a jersey sporting Mom beat me to it) At least we had a ''moment.""

The band may be returning to Chicago soon. I made my friend promise we'd go back and see them again!

Company of Thieves at City Winery

It's been said on more than one occasion what a big fan I am of Chicago based band Company of Thieves..

It's also a well known fact that I am an avid wine drinker.. so COT playing an acoustic set at City Winery is damn near perfection! I say near..for more details on my experience of City Winery read the Yelp review found here
http://www.yelp.com/biz/city-winery-chicago-chicago#hrid:e0IJxw-ItZOmA7MsrO1mwg

This was the 2nd night COT did an acoustic set at this venue, but I wasn't able to attend the previous show due to a scheduling conflict/attending ZZ Ward at Lincoln Hall.

For readers/listeners who are not familiar with the band.. It's difficult for me to place this band in a specific genre they're not all rock, but not exactly pop, more on the folk side with soul tendencies? That doesn't quite do them justice at all. I mean how do you describe something beautiful and sexy? It just exists.

I can tell you the set list perfectly combined old & new from ''Ordinary Riches'' to the most recent "Running from a Gamble'' lead singer Genevieve Schatz has grown into her musician/improvisational license having gained more touring experience under her belt since I last saw the band live. She's gained a sense of security and comfort in her own skin. A quality I've always admired in women in general.

This was also the perfect set & venue for me to actually hear what a great guitarist Marc is! He excels at acoustic playing, but I feel like I've never had the chance to experience the stripped down/fundamentals of the songs I've grown so familiar with. I hate to compare him to John Mayer's playing because it seems very cliche to do so. But like Genevieve he seemed to be very natural in his progressions and improvisational arrangements. It was downright sexy! Combine that with the guest appearance from Mike Memone on piano, (the opener) some of the most beautiful arrangements I've ever heard. It's rare that you can find an accomplished pianist who wont put you to sleep with ''old classics'' or ''bar tunes'' but MM acccomplished the task flawlessly. A true professional.

Saving the best for last!-- My favorite and recently released on YouTube cover of Lauryn Hill's ''Ex-Factor"--which at first sight seems like a mismatch of genres but sometimes opposites attract and magic happens!-- CHECK IT OUT
I'm desperately hoping that the band will release an acoustic album or at the very least an EP! I will immediately encourage every one I know to start listening to it. This performance made me fall in love with the band all over again. The storytelling in each song is unique, captivating and their message and passion for music is clearly received and charms each and every fan.

"In Dreams'' Playlist Created by Yours Truly

In Dreams

All of the melodies, chords, lyrics, instrumental arrangments remind me of some kind of dream like state I've either had (*deja vu) or what I wish to accomplish in the future. ''In Dreams'' describes how the songs make me feel/or react.. (a swagger for ''Let It Go'' by The Neighborhood)  pretending, I'm lying on the grass staring up at a summer sky even though spring is weeks away.. ''Stay Awake'' by Carousel and the first track on the playlist. (Which in fact, inspired the list as a whole.) Myself..standing in the rain for Atlas Genius ''Centered on You'' with this playlist I can project myself to different places and times like the Time Traveler..  and lately I want to actively be a happier person. Complain less, do more, smile, dance, laugh and inspire... and while some of these songs are dark at the surface, some aspect of each one are complex or dual in nature. whisper vocals, heat beat style drums, gothy synths.. ''gloom pop'' it's all layers that compose your subconscious..  Music has the power to create the change you didn't think or realize you needed..

The right song at the right moment, the right progression moves you forward..

Make dreams reality people! If you don't like something change it, if something makes you feel (good or bad) deal with it don't run. (maybe dance? it out?)

Enjoy!

New Year=New Music

I've been waiting a while to post because I needed some inspiration.

What do I hope to hear/see musically for 2013?

I'm looking forward to the following new albums:  Tegan & Sara,  Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Kitten (full album release) Ra Ra Riot, Arcade Fire, Atoms for Peace-- inspired by the articles below

http://entertainment.time.com/2013/01/03/11-albums-to-look-forward-to-in-2013/slide/kitten/#/2013/01/03/11-albums-to-look-forward-to-in-2013/slide/albums-to-get-excited-about/?&_suid=135776117148905899009945468756

http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2013/01/new-vampire-weekend-album-expected-this-spring.html

Well, I'll tell you what I don't want is more of the same! The Grammy's announced its list of performers this year Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Black Keys & FUN.. I'm all for the Black Keys (new record may drop in March according to Spin Mag.) http://www.spin.com/articles/the-black-keys-new-album-flaming-lips-tour

New inspiring covers/remixes (compliments of Indie Shuffle)

Glad to see Mark Foster of (Foster the People) has been productive while they're not touring!!:) this is one of the best I've heard.. http://www.indieshuffle.com/a-trak-kimbra-and-mark-foster-warrior-what-so-not-remix/

Total Warr --Covering the Pixies ''Where Is My Mind'' this song is one of my all time favorites, the Pixies are practically untouchable, but it's a new year time to expand your horizons, and I thought this was super creative, visually and otherwise.. (YouTube) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpvfBV4u-R4

Trails & Ways (Cover Miguel ''Sure Thing'')

originally a cheesy ''smooth'' R&B song I like that they took it to another level to where I pay attention to the instrumentation and arrangment more than the lyrics

http://www.indieshuffle.com/miguel-sure-thing-trails-and-ways-cover/

BANDS THAT ARE NEW TO ME BUT NOT NECESSARILY EVERY ONE ELSE Sky Ferreia (saw her performance on Fallon a few nights ago, and no lie, the song woke me out of a dead sleep/zombie nightmare--Thanks for that Sky, that being said, I think she relies too much on her sex appeal in the video, the song should speak for itself-- Girls shouldn't have to ''try'' to be sexy they just are--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jtTeMgWNhA

To start things off with a positive self reflecting song but peppy/up tempo song:
American Authors – Believer

Phosphorescent (a little less electro-- a little more easy listening) compliments of Earplugs Not Included

Local Natives

Save the best for last a band called Vintage Trouble

This crooner style blues/soul is what the music scene is currently lacking! It's simply beauitful. smooth and sexy, and heartfelt..
You must check this out!!
Vintage Trouble – The Bomb Shelter Sessions (Encore Edition)
Vintage Trouble – Not Alright By Me

and a few playlists compilations of my own to further extend this point (works in progress)

new tracks via Indie Shuffle & Christmas

Indie shuffle strikes again!--

AND... I've just figured out that once you select an individual track, after it's played it creates a pandora like radio station of similar tracks and just keeps going.

My only complaint is I wish there was a site or media outlet that allows me to purchase these tracks as not all are available on Itunes :(

Oh Ellie Goulding.. you can do no wrong in my eyes-- but when talented DJ's take your covers and put a zen like background beats.. to mellow you out.. I'm in heaven.. This song makes me want to turn off all the lights put on my big headphones and stare up at a ceiling of glow in the dark stars

http://www.indieshuffle.com/ellie-goulding-heartbeats-cosmonaut-grechko-edit/

A mashup of the xx ''Angels'' & TLC ''No Scrubs''-- an  unlikely pairing but undeniably sexy
http://www.indieshuffle.com/the-xx-vs-tlc-no-angels-bastille-ft-ella/

And since It's Christmas...

the xx covers Wham's Last Christmas-- http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2012/12/listen-to-the-xx-cover-whams-last-christmas.htmlOliver has a decent voice.. Who knew? (I'm prone to dislike any and all Christmas music as a result of working retail with the same Christmas tape for 4+ years) but I've since taken a break, so I can appreciate it more now.

Christmas playlist I made via Spotify.. it's something I threw together, still a work in progress

Cheering for the musical underdogs!

One of the main purposes of this blog is to draw some attention to the musical underdogs, not always in your face as top 40 records or given as much media attention as I think they deserve.

December brings all of the ''best of the year'' lists and it's a great way to check on my own progress as a blogger and see how in tune I am with other writers and critics. While I don't always agree, when some of the artists I favor are mentioned it brings me a sense of recognition that my tastes are going in the right direction

So here you go! a few of my favorite obscure best of lists that I've found on the blog circuit:
http://buzzworthy.mtv.com/2012/12/07/overlooked-artists-music-under-the-radar-2012/

(I don't particulary respect MTV's rotation but MTV2 is getting better and actually playing music) a friend pointed out a good observation when he noted that most of the bands on this list are already successful and well known in the indie circuit, but I think it's great for well deserved artists to expand their talent and fanbase even just a little) just in case you haven't heard of one or two I'm gonna break it down.

Chad Valley's album (and collaboration track with Twin Shadow) definitely caught my attention and gained a spot on the repeat play list. It's chilled and synthy pop but the tempo is fun and upbeat for fans of Friendly Fires.
Chad Valley – I Owe You This (feat. Twin Shadow)
Chad Valley – Tell All Your Friends

Marina & the Diamonds (she is British so of course I love her) she's got more authenticity than the Lady Gaga persona female driven in your face, carefree woman and her lyrics are very clever

Now Now (dreamy melodies/ mostly girl breakup songs but the lyrics are so moving) similar to that of  The xx + lo fi vibe
Prehistoric and School Friends
Now, Now – Prehistoric

Tanlines-- All of Me, great track and the name of the band is growing on me:)

Tanlines – All Of Me

2:54 has long been a favorite of mine, and after seeing them live open for the xx this year. They proved they can create a mood/atmosphere like no other band I've ever seen. I can see why they paired up with the xx.
2:54 – Sugar
It's dark, smoky room/ bad ass, lyrics of ''Sugar'' similar to the Dead Weather/ Dirty Ghosts or the Runaways.

17 New Bands You Have to Hear
http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=147&title=new_band_tips&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1&utm_source=nme&utm_medium=bestofnme&utm_campaign=bestofnme-17%20new%20bands%20you%20have%20to%20hear

This article really introduced me to some brand new artists to give me inspiration to write this entry. Thanks to my friend Christoph for passing this along!

(I tend to include the same artists on rotation and get stuck in a musical comfort zone) and the best part is these bands are favorites recommended by other artists!

So far my favorites from this article are The Crookes (remniscent of the Arctic Monkeys)

Eyes on Film

& Deaf Club (recommended by 2:54)

I haven't gotten through the whole list yet, so I'll expand and add a section later.

Enjoy the new stuff, remember to keep an open mind, if you don't like something right away.. listen to it again some other time--- Maybe you're just not ready to hear it just yet:)

Gypsy playlist

Here's a new playlist I've been working on. Inspired by the last few posts

The title Gypsy comes from the European dance wave influence and a free spiritied vagrant/ ''club vibe'', and of course tracks recently listed on Indie Shuffle including the one below not yet available on Spotify

Enjoy!

Rock & Roll with (distinction & distortion)

Ever since Jack White & the Black Keys came along and showed me the power of the distorted bluesy guitar I've been obssessed with anything that remotely resembles the sweet sweet scratchy sound!

So given that information.. WHY has it taken me so long to discover the awesomeness of Jeff the Brotherhood?? (produced by Dan Auerbach of the BK)

Words cannot accurately convey how much I adore them!

Six pack is my favorite

It's Electric(onica)-- More links added 11/15/12

I was revisiting an old playlist and counted the number of bands on it that I've seen live (10 total  out of 33 songs) a few repeats and felt incredibly lucky to have catched these ''indie bands'' when they were in my city. Including Friendly Fires & Daughter! see below.. for completely new and different remixes

I used to hate covers and remixes, why mess with a good thing? But as my tastes have changed and songs get entirely played out, I've grown to appreciate the new more creative take. In fact I was resistant to the whole Electronica movement at first dismissing them as ''button pushers'' but I was defniitely wrong and thee songs below prove the best of both worlds.

ENJOY!

Best New Albums

Happy Tuesday!

On the forefront today is Gary Clark Jr. (See my rave reviews of his live set at Lollapalooza this past summer) but the previously inaccessible album Blak and Blu is finally here due to high demand and his extensive touring schedule.. including this fantastic set visiting Jimmy Fallon..
http://www.somekindofawesome.com/journal/2012/10/26/watch-gary-clark-jr-numb-x-aint-messin-around-live-fallon.html

(the only constructive criticism that's more of a personal preference really-- is when he switches from R&B crooner to blues, it's just strange without any transition or connective tissue. I understand he's trying to show his range and duality as an artist but I feel like the guitar playing blues comes naturally and is more authentic

Check out Glitter Aint Gold, and Numb

Gary Clark Jr. – Blak And Blu 2

The past few weeks I've had Ellie Goulding's Halcyon on repeat specifically ''Only You'' the backbeat is infectious, perfect getting ready to go out song
Ellie Goulding – Halcyon

She eventually gained some momentum off the 2010 hit ''Lights'' and this new album is more developed, and I'd venture to guess influenced by her romantic relationship with Skrillex, but that's a good thing. It has a more complex sound, but what's somewhat disappointing is that she doesn't have some of the best collaborations on her new album

http://earplugsnotincluded.com/ellie-goulding-stay-awake-prod-by-madeon/

I recently had the opportunity to see UK trio Daughter at Schubas Tavern, (Sold Out show) where my new friend and I were discussing who to compare the vocal style with. He said Feist. I disagreed. Elena has the range of Florence and the Machine but it's less theatrical and more pure sounding. Nothing is better than a small room acoustically perfect and the crowd is silent it's almost deafening.. That's how you know you have real talent.

''Run'' is a great song but check out their newest single Smother

Music Bloggers unite and their voices shall be heard

Thanks to a friend I was introduced to this new website/Spotify app called Hype Machine.  This site features and shares blogs by other writers such as myself.

I'm so excited to have found other like minded music enthusiasts and their web designs are top notch! and they have tons of links to listen to songs!

My favorite so far is www.earplugsnotincluded.com.

The author has an affiinity to the indie pop/British artists like Ellie Goulding and Benjamin Francis Leftwich of the like:) Really excited to connect with other writers and readers and share ideas!

I've been a huge fan of Spotify the past year or so, and I think its amazing how much that they've grown and how much they've given back to the music community. It's impressive and inspiring for sure

I'm not tech savy obviously and I'd love help redesigning the site and learning how to input new share links photos/videos.

But these are all things I can learn. Maybe I could take a class or grab help from some buddies.  What's most important to me is content at the moment.  So check those sites out and support amazing listeners and writers share your ideas and get your voice heard too!

New Material from BOH, Thee Oh See's and A free festival

Thee Oh Sees is a band I've heard before and liked but I'm not sure I'm sold on the album as a whole, the vocals are grating at times, but I like the overall bluesy south vibe. Listen to the whole album for free compliments of StereoGum

Another new playlist

This is one of my favorite playlists I made for my friend Laura. She needed some inspiration and this playlist is an anthem or soundtrack for my approach to dating It's mostly edgy ''If you don't like then take a walk'' kind of attitude  with a bit of a vunerable side. I consider myself a Unicorn of sorts, I'm a girl, who likes watching football, and rocker style converse and skinny jeans, but I'm still a lady:)

I'm a F*in Unicorn

RAC/ Indieshuffle.com & a new playlist of my own!

Whoa it's been a month? Where have I been?  Not to worry, this post should make up for lost time! What do I have for you? Only on the most amazing music site/concept I've come across in the past year!

Indieshuffle.com ---this is where it's at my friends!!

There are still some kinks because it's new but this site has some of the best remixes and currently hot songs you may never heard of. There are also links to free downloads of the songs you hear.

Started by this guy Jason Grishkoff from South Africa in 2009, just wanting to share music with friends because he was passionate about it he researches all indie bands and posts some really original stuff, sound familar?? he may even make this blog obsolete:)

Right now I've bookmarked several things feel free to also look them up for:

Blood Diamond's remix of Ellie Goulding's new track Anything Can Happen (the original is standard E.G. but it's very one dimensional and not up to par, so this takes it to the next level that allows it to reach ''hit'' status

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J8HkMdzMh8

Any remix done by RAC is always fresh and really improves upon the original
Here's one from Hockey. (a band I've never heard of previous to today)
http://www.indieshuffle.com/hockey-too-fake-rac-remix/

People want to dance damnit! and that's waht RAC understands, but their approach is always to maintain the what's great and ''rock'' based theme of the song.. Hockey on it's own has a Strokes/Vaccines complaint/strain heartbroken rockstar type of vibe ''I'm just too fake for the world, I got too much soul for you'' How do I relate to this? I just do!:)

Also this is a favorite remix done by RAC of Tokyo Police Club (Courtesy of Spotify)

Tokyo Police Club – Be Good (RAC Remix)  great song, kind of meloncholy on it's own but the remix brings an 80's vibe with the handclap + keyboards but not in a cheesy way. Again makes it more approachable and danceworthy

I think we can all agree that all the of singles released on Foster's the People album Torches have been played out and desperately want to hear something new from them!
RAC's remix of Houdini makes it brand spanking new to your ears!!(found originally on indieshuffle.com)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeDBsZtcWPo

Another gem I found from indieshuffle.com Is a band called How To Dress Well, check out this unreleased track (which is why the link is from YouTube)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYMk-wv0kJ8

It's got a old school early 90's R&B/Color Me Bad Vibe (oh yes, I went there) because on a Saturday Morning don't you just like to go back to your awkward adolescence?? look at old pictures and listen to all the embarrassing cd's you own back then? if you want to add a little cheese factor to your life and have an excuse to act silly  put this song on!

Impressed yet? Yeah me too! Thanks Indieshuffle.com! Now go like the page and explore!

Glad to be back!

Also, a new playlist in progress! Let me know what you think.. the theme is Youth is Wasted on the Young, thoughts!

Lolla 2012 Highlights

So as usual I didn't take pictures, but with the quality of my phone camera (not an Iphone) they wouldnt' have turned out anyway.

Spin took some great photos check them out here

Friday: First band of the day was Metric and they did not disappoint, I spent the whole morning jamming to their new album to get myself prepared. They were on the Bud Light stage which is inarguably the one with the best kept lawn (no mud puddles anywhere) The set was great, they played ''Youth Without Youth'' ''Help I'm Alive'' and the energy was just rampant on stage, lead singer Emily reminded me of Gwen Stefani, frantic, but not misplaced or awkward, they were excited to be there and fans were pleasantly surprised how well their music translated. Without a doubt and agreed by many best set of the day.

Metric – Youth Without Youth

Metric – Breathing Underwater

Black Keys: What can I say? They ARE the Black Keys, I saw them back at the United Center in March with my dad and the set was great but at that show I felt like they were so far removed from the fans that the show lost its luster. You'd think this same theory would carry over to a festival of fans in the dozens of thousands but somehow I felt closer to them even if I wasn't physically close. The fireworks to the left front of the stage were the perfect touch. They played the perfect mix of old and new songs, and rocked out! My favorite song? Surprisingly, Girl is On My Mind. and Same Old Thing. It finally started to cool down but the energy & lighting was on fire.

The Black Keys – Girl Is On My Mind

Everyone went nuts and started doing the ''Carlton'' dance during Lonely Boy. The best part though (as with many of the acts I will go on to speak about) was that during the set Patrick & Dan did a fair amount of just jamming.

Jamming between musicians the whole reason to see a show live as opposed to just buying the album and listening to it. The sheer improvisation and the spontenaity of the relationship that usually spans decades, mixed with the adoration and energy of thousands of fans, cannot be put into a single recording. (not even vinyl my friends)

Saturday:

Personally, this was my throwaway day, I wanted to see the Chili Peppers and Neon Indian, those were the bands on my must see list.
Good thing too-- In the middle of Neon Indian's set(after only 20mins) they made an announcement that they couldn't play anymore, and a PSA to stay hydrated and safe. We thought there was an equipment problem, but then they announced there was a National Weather Advisory storm warning, and the park needed to be evacuated.

My buddy Tony and I looked at each other in disbelief? WTF?? no way! does this mean we're gonna miss Alabama Shakes and Temper Trap? They are supposed to go on in 40mins? Reality set in. then dissappointment. then anger. then disbelief. How the hell are they going to MAKE everyone leave,? How will they enforce that? I suggested we go to the beer tents, but we saw they were packing up. Not selling any beer.  That's when I knew shit was real. I said to Tony, ''Let's go grab sushi and a beer right off Michigan & Madison we're close enough to the park if it doesn't last long.. but we have to hurry, it's a small place and I don't want people getting in before us!'' We high-tailed it as quickly as we could,

but this was the crazy part: ''They'' kick everyone out but don't open the barricades or exits, except for TWO. that's right two exits for all of these people. Finally, some people with more athletic prowess than I possess, jump the gates! Last year we had people jumping the gates to get IN, not out!! finally, success-- we got a table, got in before it started to crazy hurricane style storm, and proceeded to drink Sapporo & eat sushi/noodles and making the best out of things. (Tony's the one that taught me to be more positive and roll with things more) quite an accomplishment for an unwilling student/control freak like me. & now I was the voice of reason:) It all worked out and we re entered the park by 6.

Somehow (unknowingly) I made my way over the Perry's tent Skream & Banga were on. I like Skream's remix of La Roux ''In for the Kill'' also featured on Entourage soundtrack

La Roux – In For The Kill - Skream's Let's Get Ravey remix

but what I did NOT like was the repeatatory nature of shouting out ''Skream & Banga, Banga Skreeeaaam'' every 2 minutes the entire set! Nor did I enjoy the people flinging themselves into the mud, or stepping in it! So naturally, I sat myself down on the curb as to avoid the mess and still enjoy all of the people watching. I was even handing out baby wipes for those poor souls I felt had half a chance of reedeming themselves. and I was even rewarded a free beer for my efforts. (SCORE!)

I stayed on said curb talked to a bunch of people through the Calvin Harris set, stood in line for 20mins for the bathroom, but met a girl dressed as a the blue Power Ranger from Austrailia! Calvin Harris was just okay until the very end of the set, where he played the hits. I hate when they wait until the end, by then I lose interest!

On to meet friends for the Chili Peppers.. I found them which was a miracle in itself.  The set was great, again another jam session between old friends. Flea was the standout! I LOVE Flea, he's a very wise man. he said ''Love each other, and be nice!'' and other random quotes throughout the night. He carried the show with his solo bass ''mini jam's'' Anthony Kiedis seemed to ''check out'' after the first couple songs. which was definitely disappointing but Flea was so charming on his own that I didn't care. And they played all the right songs including, ''Give it Away'' an oldie but a goodie and ''Look Around'' my favorite from the new album
except they didn't play Scar Tissue:(  I was sad about that.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Look Around

All in all despite the weather it was a great day. But I definitely felt sorry for the people that only bought Saturday Passes, I heard that Perry Farrell himself was handing out free passes for next year because of the storm delay. Very decent of him.

Sunday: I knew this would be my favorite day. It was Jack & Flo day! --with a bit of Polica, & Gary Clark Jr. mixed in.

Polica was great! very Bjork sounding, and even better live than on tape. It made me want to go back and listen to the whole album not just the two singles already in my Ipod.

New discovery of the day: Aloe Blacc, he was surprisingly retro and refreshing and up-beat and reminded me of Raphael Saddique's set at Lolla last year.  He very amiable, concerned, and aware of the crowd, he wanted to make sure everyone was having a good time. Dedicating a song to them. I look forward to a new album from him.

Aloe Blacc – You Make Me Smile

Up next, Gary Clark Jr. I saw his video for ''Bright Lights'' on the VH1 sponsored Pop up Video screen as I was walking with my buddies and I was pumped ''**squee** he's like a bluesy-er version of Lenny Kravitz, he's even got the aviator sunglasses and a hat!

Gary Clark Jr. – Things Are Changin' - Live [Solo Acoustic]

I decided to take a spot on the hill, more trees, more leaves more organic setting if you will. The sun coming through the trees at just the right light. I was by myself, but I didn't mind the music was soulful and reflective anyway. It was perfect. GCJ might be from Austin but Chicago Home of the Blues was not lost on him. His band was the ultimate compliment. Very few unecessary words. Just playing. The set was never-ending it seemed and I was glad for it.

I got something to eat before Gaslight Anthem, and it was so packed at that set, I couldn't get to my friends so I parked it on the curb again. I was suprised how packed it was. Now I admit I was a fan of their two singles but when you really think about it, the lyrics are awfully cheesy, ''Can you see my heart,/can you see how it bleeds?'' ''Turn the record over'' -- and the whole gravely vocal,  let's emote every inch of intensity we possibly can/ even if the lyrics are less than inspiring, we are gonna sell it because that's who we ARE in real life cliche'' is very irrelevant. This image/cliche has been over used and sold by other rock bands/artists from NJ  has been done before and better by ''The Boss'' and Bon Jovi. so I'd be surprised if this band has the staying power or creativity for another album. I think like Kings of Leon, this is creative as they are capable of and it's not enough considering the competition that's out there.

On to Florence!--In a word she was magical... but to use some more adjectives that would provide a clearer picture: She was statuesque, ethereal, dramatic, and oh so very Welsh! Her mannerisms and dialogue reminded me of Lady Gaga but more believable. She encouraged ''human sacrifice'' and people ''raising up'' on each other's shoulders, and giving the person next to you a hug. Luckily I was standing next to a very nice girl couple. so why not?  The three of us were fast friends and in awe of Florence. She performed ''Breath of Life'' from the Snow White & the Huntsman soundtrack for the first time live, and I was hoping and praying she would. Of course ''Dog Days are Over'' was the crowd favorite.

Florence + The Machine – Breath Of Life

Then I waited for Jack-- it was all muddy and smelly at the Red Bull stage  by the last day of Lolla so even though it was Jack, I wanted to be comfortable and enjoy myself as opposed to being smushed in and trampled by the hardcore fans. I parked a spot in front of the big screen with plenty of room to rock out and dance. (Jack would've hated it)

Read this amazing article on the ''live experience'' below

http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2010/07/jack-white-and-the-pro-real-experience-economy/59896/

First up was the all guy band, which were great! Sixteen Saltines was my favorite and the show opener if I remember correctly. Jack was all smiles, (sigh) he seemed geniunely happy to be up there at that place/time with us. Which is a suprisingly rare reaction for musicians of his caliber. Normally they are so rehearsed that it's easy to lose that connection, focus and be ''in the moment'' There was a moment where Jack paused and closed his eyes for at least 30 seconds. Maybe to take it all in, and try to figure out where the show would lead him.

I was in complete shock & awe, waiting impatiently.

The all girl band rocked the house though. definitely my favorite, there was a piano solo by Jack of ''Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground,''a country version of ''Hotel Yorba'' Also Ruby Amanfou, his partner in crime and duet partner on ''Love Interruption''--also a contestant on the Sing Off last season, was mesmorizing and complimentary for the authentic Nashville blues/soul sound.

Some ''Ball & Biscuit'' action & The Hardest Button to Button, Freedom at 21(I sang every word of that song and there was lots of headbanging and sing along action)

Finale--  Seven Nation Army with the crowd providing the ''Oh-Oh -Oh--Oooh Oooh's'' it was incredible and it really sank in how many people were there in the same place at the same time, (that wasn't including the group of fools who decided to go to Perry's stage to see Justice instead) Seriously? oh well-- ''to each his own I guess''-- was last with ten minutes to spare I was hoping he'd do another encore, but no such luck. The set and the man was everything I thought he would be. tall, pale, messy hair and a complete F'in genius, always keeping the fans guessing as to what arrangement and song he would do.

and then came the inevitable feeling of emptiness--The highlight of my year was over, it went by so fast! What do I look forward to now? Sure they'll be shows, new albums coming out, but will there be another Jack show exactly like this? Probably not. Maybe so. I hope he comes to Chicago again!!

Oh well, football season starts soon!-- Now the most important question that will plague me for another 11 1/2 months--- Who will headline Lolla 2013?.. I'm convinced I won't have any proper guesses until the new year starts and the question I ask myself every year.. How will they top this year?
